Read, Research and React : Design DNA

Hello Advanced Students,

Your assignment is to read the following article about google and the resurgence of italian design influence. Conduct research and cite one example of a design influence that you have discovered. The topic for this assignment is design DNA and how it can evolve and influence over time.

Design influence can be seen as time progresses, tastes change to reflect different design influences. Modernism was used as a standard design aesthetic for so long that the generation who grew up with it began to reject is's rationality in favor of more frenetic design styles. Such a shift occurred between the mid to late 80's and the early 90's. For example, the 1994 Honda Civic has a more rounded and softer appearance than it's predecessor. Coincidentally, Comic Sans was also born in 1994... perhaps exposing the tastes of the era that were leaning towards more organic design influence and moving away from sharp angular elements. Other examples that show the shift from angular design to rounded design can be seen in Casio watches of those respective eras (above).

Design DNA Assignment:

• Read the following article on googles nod to Italian design in their newest product offerings
• Research and identify an element of design from a certain era, movement or style that can be seen in modern products, architecture, style, fashion, etc. For example: Elements of 80's aesthetic can be seen in the modern neuvo-retro style of synthewave or outrun style artwork.. 
• Write an essay to identify the source of influence (cite details) and how it is being utilized (show examples). Explain the origins and how it influences the modern counterparts we see.
• Essay should be 150 words minimum.
• Show 2-3 visuals to explain your connections.
