PBL Apparel Design Project

Hello Students,
Your newest project is a Problem Based Learning assignment in apparel design. The goal is to identify a problem and design a solution that overcomes that problem. You will provide design sketches to show the evolution of an idea and a final mood board and rendering that showcases details and advantages of your design. Finally you will render the design in 2 different color schemes.

Reading/Research/Writing Assignment:
Read the following link: How to become a shoe designer
Reasearch any other information your might need and in your project post, write a short 2-3 paragraph essay and identify what type of design, tech and engineering skills are required to become a shoe/sport apparel designer. Describe one pathway that might be utilized to achieve that goal. Identify a shoe designer and describe their career pathway.

PBL Apparel Design Project:
Your task is to identify a problem that exists in a specific sport or activity and design a shoe that assists in overcoming that problem.

  • Identify in writing the problem your design will solve
  • Create at least 9 design sketches, including top, side and bottom views
  • Create a mood board that displays design influence, color palettes, details, along with your pencil sketches with color details added
  • Create final artwork of your design from the side in 2 color schemes
  • Design and develop a name and logo for your shoe, incorporate into your final artwork
  • Create a final presentation board
  • Post all the designs from beginning to end on your blog with a short written description of your design and describe it's advantages and how it over comes the problem your originally identifies.

Case study: Tinker Hatfield
As an example, the design process for Air Jordan XI's took over 18 months, going through multiple design iterations and refinements. A designer should have a vision for their design, but should show patience in allowing the design to take shape, evolve and change.

Preliminary sketches with color added, notice the strong design elements that are retained in the final design
Mood Boards help show the process, elements, evolution and influence of a design.
Final sketches, blueprints, 3D models and isometric renderings are all created as phases of the final design development. Much more engineering work is required to complete the product.
Have fun!
