Design Logo's for SCHS Clubs

Hello Students,
Your next project is a real-world design challenge: Design, refine and create a logo for a SCHS club. The club can be your choice, but make sure the club is involved and give you input to the design. The club is your client. Make sure you communicate with them along all the steps involved in this creative problem solving process.

SCHS Club Logo Design Project:

• You will be graded on your ability to translate the needs as dictated by your client to create a compelling and eye-catching design that utilizes proper application of design, color and typography and fits the style, craftsmanship and limitations as set by the client and project.
• You are encouraged to research similar clubs/logos and their designs, to use creativity and design skills to create an eye catching product for your client.

Project Brief / Description:

Develop, design and create a compelling logo design for an official SCHS club. This design may be printed on t-shirts, business cards, flyers or placed on a website. Make sure you create flexible artwork appropriate for all media.

Meet with the representatives of your club to gain insight on what kind of imagery, message and style the club would like to see in their final logo design.

Create multiple design sketches, share them with your client. Create more sketches, refine them. Make sure the client is signing off along the way so your final efforts are not rejected.

When a final design is chosen, render the artwork and get approval. Then you may deliver final artwork in multiple formats.

Design Directions:

• Create 10-20 Thumbnail sketches to explore your logo ideas (small 2"X2" pencil sketches)
• Shoe the thumbnail sketches to your client before proceeding to final artwork
• Final Design must be created as vector art
• Design must use work in black and white, and color
• Design must be original and not derivative or copied. Traced illustrations must be made from original photographs
• Design must read well and have good contrast against lighter colors
• Design must contain all copy requested by client

Final Deliverables:

• A compelling logo design for a SCHS club, approved by the club members and appropriate for use on campus
• Final logo designs rendered in color, b&w and at different scales (very small, medium, large)
• Final logo designs delivered in multiple file formats (PDF, JPG, PNG)

Case Study: Cabrillo CAP Shirt Design

Although I am your instructor I am also a designer with many years of experience. I love creating apparel designs because it gives a great sense of accomplishment to see my work in print or being worn. Years ago I was asked to design a t-shirt for participants of Cabrillo College's CAP, a summer academy program. They were so pleased with the design they have returned each year to update the designs for their different courses being offered. Quality design work can bring clients back again and again. I struggled with the initial design, after 10-15 iterations I settled on this rough arrangement below. I refined the artwork and explored typefaces. The final design was effective enough to be re-used year after year with minor changes.

The client gave me all the copy to be included in the design and a list of courses for the summer program. After a few pencil sketches this rough example was chosen. I began roughly mocking up the design in adobe illustrator and exploring type faces and arrangement of elements.

Upon approval of the rough design I moved forward and rendered my finished design, creating a unique icon for the courses, health and medicine, agriculture, welding and criminal justice. Then I explored different color combinations for the shirt design to give the client options for printing.

 My client returned the next year for an updated version, changing the welding icon to a solar technology icon. This design was to be printed on green shirts. It was decided that a complimentary orange would look good for a highlight color, with white and black for contrast. This is a 3 color print, black, white and orange.
