New Assignment: Drawing Faces

Professionals stress the importance in drawing skills across many career disciplines. Being able to visualize your ideas on paper is powerful skill that shouldn't be overlooked. Additionally, developing a comfortable and fast hand when drawing is important for the animator. There is no wrong way to draw, the only mistake you can make is to not draw.

Faces Sketch / Draw Challenge:

• With your new sketchbook choose a page a create 20 squares with a ruler
• Find 20 people and draw their faces in a quick cartoony or sketch style
• Don't spend more than 5-10 minutes on each face, keep it quick and loose
• Look for the differences in the shapes of peoples faces, facial features, hair, hats, glasses etc. Are their eyes wide or narrow? Are their eye brows thick or thin? Look for the details and express them in as few lines as possible
• When you are complete choose 1 of the best examples, use a piece of tracing paper and draw a more refined version of your sketch, pay attention to line thickness and strive for a more illustrated look to the face
• When complete scan the refined version and trace the lines in adobe illustrator to achieve a clean version of your illustration.

Quick sketches can convey a depth of emotion that an overly worked illustration can lose. People with lots of character in their faces are fun to sketch.
